
Magnum Opus - Composition Competition
For today's gifted composers
1st Prize: $1,000 and a performance by the OCCS. $50 entry fee.

Sponsored by: Orange County Choral Society. Created for today’s choral composers interested in benefiting from the opportunity to have their original work evaluated and performed professionally.
Description: Entrants are invited to submit an adaptation of a Christmas Carol, American Christmas hymn, or theme, or an original piece on a Christmas-related theme. Four to eight choral parts are recommended, and there are no time restrictions. Both scared and secular text will be considered equally. Accompaniment may be any of the following: a capella choir or choir with organ piano, solo instrument, full wind ensemble or any combination thereof.
Award: The first place winner will receive a $1,000 award. The winning composition will be performed at the 2011 Christmas Concert by the Orange County Choral Society in Orange County, CA. The winning composition entrant will also receive a recorded copy of the live performance, engineered, edited and preserved on CD.
Submission Guidelines:
* An adaptation of a Christmas carol, American Christmas hymn or theme, or an original piece on a Christmas-related theme.
* Accompaniment can be any of the following: a cappella choir, or choir with organ, piano, solo instrument or wind ensemble (flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, percussion), or any combination thereof.
* 4-8 choral parts are recommended. (Further divisi is possible; range is not an issue.)
* Sacred or secular text is allowed.
* Liturgical and concert works will be equally considered.
* No time restrictions.
* Preferential consideration for new works such as: World Premiere, U.S Premiere, or Western U.S. Premiere.
* Anonymous submission.
* Remove all names (except poet, if necessary) and identifying marks.
* Provide a completed Magnum Opus Submission Form in a separate sealed envelope and enclosed with the composition.
* Submit a legible, photocopy-ready score with piano reduction for rehearsal purposes.
* Recording of any kind (MIDI, piano, etc.) is strongly encouraged but not required.
* If text is not in public domain, composer is expected to secure and present evidence of performing rights to the text used.
Selection Process:
* The OCCS Artistic Director shall review all scores and select entries to be presented to the Selection Committee for consideration.
* A Selection Committee, consisting of members chosen by the Artistic Director and Board, shall review the scores to select the winning submission.
* The decision of the Selection Committee will be final.
* Winning Composer will be notified by October 1, 2011
Other Items of Interest:
* The winning composition will be scheduled for performance at the December 2011 Christmas concert in Orange County, CA. OCCS encourages the composer’s attendance and cooperation in media publicity and press coverage.
* The winning composer must provide a final performance score by November 1, 2011.
* OCCS shall make necessary copies for the chorus, director, and rehearsal accompanist.
* There are no restrictions according to race, sex, age, or residency.
* If materials are desired to be returned, please enclose a self- addressed stamped envelope.
* A composer may submit more than one piece.
* OCCS reserves the right not to select a winning composition and/or award a prize.
* OCCS retains discretion and the sole performance and recording rights for the winning piece for the 2012 calendar year.
